I haven't used QBasic since I upgraded to WindowsXP Pro.
How do I find out what version I have?
When I start QB I get,
Welcome to MS-DOS QBASIC

There are two versions of QBasic. Version 1.0 and 1.1. You probably have 1.1, but the differences between them are minor anyway. What you don't have is QuickBasic, whose major versions were 4.5 and 7.1 (though there were a few others). For the record, QBasic 1.0 was released after, and based on, QuickBasic 4.5; but is stripped down, and has no compiler. (All QuickBasic versions include a compiler, which allows you to create EXEs from your programs.) 7.1 is slightly more efficient, has more database functions, and two or three other things that 4.5 doesn't have, though this is rarely a big deal. One may acquire these here. They are illegal to obtain without a licence, but Microsoft seems to have stopped caring a long time ago. |

Will QuickBasic run my Qbasic programs?

QuickBasic will run most Qbasic programs unchanged.
If you use CALL ABSOLUTE, you will need to load a library containing it. The default library, QB.QLB (or QBX.QLB) contains it
as well as interrupt functions.
QB /L Libraryname
where #Libraryname is the name of the library.
If no library name is used
i.e. QB/L
then QB.QLB or QBX.QLB is used.

Will QuickBasic run my Qbasic programs? As I said, QBasic is a stripped-down version of QuickBasic. QuickBasic 4.5 will, with almost no exceptions, run any QBasic program. (But the reverse is not always true.) Please see my first reply in this thread. |
