Total newbie here. I'm running qbasic 1.1 from a dos prompt. Should I be able to create sound when in dos or do I have to compile and run in windows? Like I said I just started reading a book about qbasic. I got as far as creating lines and circles but can't get beeps or play to work.

Welcome to QBasic! Well, I don't know anything about SoundBlaster stuff, but I do know a little about the simple speaker in the computer case. To make a default beep sound (I don't know if this will make the Musica Beep or whatever you have...I don't think so), use the Beep command. Just that. Beep. For a sound, use the Sound 100, 10 command. Sound 100 (that's the frequency [sp?]), 10 (that's the lenth in [mili?]seconds.) Change the FQ and delay as long as you want. I reccomend using QBasic version 7.1 (7.1 and 4.5 are available here...http://qbutil.hypermart.net). It is free. 7.1 and 4.5 come with a great help system and buit-in compiler. If you have any more questions about the specific versions, e-mail me. Have fun!
