In the past on the old board I had asked this question. How do you run qbasic in windos xp? The responce was you can't run the program in anything higher than 95. Well a fellow classmate and my self found out how. Qbasic will only run inside dos so if you run XP like me, you notice that you only get this little command promt. First you have to change the size of the dos screen. Right click the top corner of the dos screen and enter properties. Change the screen size to full screen. Exit dos and download a copy of qbasic 4.5. It comes ziped so unzip it with winzip in a directory you created for for qbasic. Make sure the file is fully unziped. The exe file is still compressed after the first unzip. Now you must run the win compatability wizard. Follow the instructions and be sure to check the boxes which turn off xp features which might stop basic from running properly. Apply all changes and save. DO NOT CREATE AN ICON FOR THE PROGRAM. It won't work from xp. You have to start the program the old fashion DOS way. c:\qbasic\qb Win98 users I will post how its done when my classmate sends me the details. Good luck.

Not quite right about QBasic not running in anything higher than Win 95. I've used QBasic 1.1 in '98 and ME. I'm using it now in Win 2000 and it works fine.
The trick in these OS's is creating and editing the PIF file.

I use Windows ME, also, and it works just fine without editing PIF files!

Now, this thread is a little dead, but I'm posting in it anyhoo, 'cause I've seen the same thing on all the QB forums I've ever been on. QB (1.1, 4.5, and 7.whatever-it-is) all run without a hitch on 98. I've only tried 7.w-i-i on XP, and all it does is gives me a warning screen and the screen res[olution] is reeeeeeeeeeeeealy high (translation: small text). I don't know where all these QB-XP incompatabilities rumors started, but at least with 7.w-i-i (otherwise known as QBasic Extended, or QBX), it works fine.

Newbie here. I'm running qbasic 4.5 on Windows 2000 and so far the only hitch I've run across is making sounds with like PLAY. All I can get is BEEP sound. Exciting huh?

Whenever I run Qbasic in XP the screen comes up all wierd. The left and right edges are stretched outside the screen boundary, and will stay like that until I load and run a program, then it returns to normal. Is this only happening to me? What's going on?
