Well, someone asked me this once, "how many friends do you have, Earl?". After much thought, I replied, "I don't know". Well, its been about a month now, and I've finally concluded it. I'll respond in the poll, so you can all guess for now Anyway, what qualifies as a friend? In these modern times, anything that is human and will speak to you routinely is a friend. This includes MySpace people, people you send chain e-mails to, anyone on your "buddy list", any one in your address book, forum members you see a lot, etc. Sure, this may be much, but the Internet does encourage a lot of interaction instantaneously. Thus, whether you actually like the person or not, they'd be your friend (at least in theory, because if they talk to you, they might think you're their friend). As far as my own personal number goes, I included all you guys, everyone in all 5 of my e-mail accounts, all the readers of my blog, everyone I talk to in school (even if only to say "hi" and engage in small talk), everyone I see more than ten times on the same forum thread (ie we'd have to be discussing something for that to happen, as I don't post to those "spam" threads or "world's longest thread" thingies), etc. So, using my own guidelines, you can see how my number is as high as it is. Perhaps I should restrict it more...

I didn't really count, but that's a rough estimate.

I'm not going to vote because it's too subjective. I refuse to count randoms on my contact lists as friends, and if someone's worth as a friend is NULL, well, something plus NULL is always NULL. (In some languages anyway.)
What I mean is, when someone's in a grey area as to whether I want to count them, my counting mechanism fails. Disregarding internet-only people, I have a few close friends, several good friends, many, many, many acquaintances I'm on speaking terms with, and the occasional few people I hate.
Add in internet-only people I value, that's about 30 more. All you guys, couple of others I've known for a while.

I'm not very talkative in real life. So there I'd say I have two people I like. Most of the other people I know get on my nerves and I'd be better off alone in a corner.
Internet people... 5-8 I would say. You guys and a few from other sites.
