Okay, I am going to attempt to teach my self Qbasic with nothing but tutorials and a few forums. I, however, can't figure out much of anything. Sorry if this is already posted but I don't understand most of the terms used. I don't know how to acess the qbasic program that, may or may not, be installed on my computer. I have minor dos knowledge, I put emphasis on minor, and am running windows XP.
At the moment I just need to know how to get/acess the program and I can find tutorials from there. Thanks for reading.

There are several sites that offer Qbasic and QuickBasic.
Qbasic is the editor that came with Dos 5.0 and up (including with windows 95 and perhaps 98).
QuickBasic is almost identical (except for a few advanced features that are a little different) but also comes with a compiler. That is you can make EXEs with it also.
Whichever you get, just make a desktop link to where it is installed.
A caveat here. There have been a number of people reporting problems running QB on WinXP. So you should look for forum posts about that (including the ones on this board). As MS gets farther and farther removed from MS-DOS it is likely that QB will have more and more problems running. It is still a great environment for learning basic, however, in my opinion.
Once you get the link (actually a pif file) made on the desktop, it will take you to the editor which is very similar the the MS-DOS editor (actually they used basically the same program for both in the beginning).
This is where you type in the code for your program. Using the menu functions you can also open an existing program to run and/or edit it.

1 clarification. I said the Qbasic was the editor.... and that is correct...however it also includes a runtime module so that you can run code from the 'editor' or from the command line.

Best QB downloads site I know of, by far: www.brisray.com/qbasic/qdload.htmAnd a tutorial, by me, that takes more of an "everything explained" approach, unlike most tutorials which show you how to so something, but leave the inner mechanics until later. This may or may not work for you. www.autopack.com/aleks/host/QB_A_1.TXT(I suggest you click File->Save as, and save it somewhere on your hard disk for easier reading.)

(I suggest you click File->Save as, and save it somewhere on your hard disk for easier reading.) I see why. Thanks for the tutorial, I found a download earlier and got 4.5. Is 7 better or should I just stick with 4.5?

QB 7.1 is a bit better, but doesn't have very much that is difficult do do in QB 4.5
QB 4.5 is more commonly used, so to be sure that they will work for most people, you may want to stick with that. (Not that it'll make any difference at all this early on, id est you won't be using any advanced features for a while)
Some people use QB 1.0 for this reason, as well. (It's got even less features).
This is discussed in my tutorial too.

Perhaps starting a new thread would be the best place to start.
I also must say I don't know what an odd series is.
Do you mean 1+3+5+7+...+n?
If you do, the easiest-to-understand way is to go through all those numbers and add them to a "storage" variable.
sum = 0
FOR i = 1 to 55 STEP 2 'STEP 2 means add 2 each time; so only odd numbers will be included
sum = sum + i
NEXT
PRINT sum
If you need more help, start a new thread and explain your problem in more detail. Thanks,
Mikrondel

If you need more help, start a new thread and explain your problem in more detail. Thanks, Mikrondel But that's just what I would do.
