Run it in compatability mode. Try that first. I'd go with 95 configuration, as it is closest to when QB was designed for (QB was designed to run on DOS, which means it should run on anything that has a DOS emulator, however it not necessarily does. So, the closer you are, the higher your chances of stabilty are (theoretically)).
How fast is your computer? Technically, if its faster than 500 MHz, it should be sufficient, however with the DOS-Emulator's need for power, you'll feel better with far more (say 1.5 GHz or higher. Mine is 2.6 GHz and initially DOS wanted more. So, I threw a nice leash around it, and it behaved from there on).
I do know that QB (and any other DOS-emulated program) uses up a lot of resources. I'll copy my settings down, however to this day I can't figure out which one it was that really cut down on CPU usage:
Program Tab: "Run: Maximized", "Close on exit". Font tab: "Run both font types", Font size: Auto" Memory tab: "Conventional Memory: Total: Auto", "Conventional Memory: Initial Environment: Auto", "Expanded Memory: None", "Extended memory: none", MS-DOS protected mode memory: Auto" Misc tab: "Foreground: Allow screen saver", "Background: Always suspend", "Termination: Warn if active", "Idle sensitivity: <somewhere in the middle>", "Other: Fast Pasting", "Windows shortcut keys: <check all boxes>". Screen tab: "Usage: Full size", "Window: Restore settings at startup", "Performance: Fast ROM Emulation", "Performance: Dynamic memory allocation"
A lot of these settings are defaults, and as I said, your best bet may be to try to run QB in compatability mode.

I wonder...
I hope this isn't inappropriate, but I know I'll kick myself if I don't ask:
I know someone who has practically the exact same configuration (he and his friends helped build it). I know this sounds strange, however just answer this simple question: do you have QBasic 4th period with a teacher who's initials are SR, and go to a spiffy little school initialed as FHSD?

Well, you're not the person I was thinking of (he goes by the name of Fishy, and he just IMmed me that he fried his comp while trying to add even more RAM to it! rofl!), but its still well to meet you. I don't have MSN, but I do have Gmail (although any mail client would work). I'll throw you on the list, and mail you from there (I want my GMail account to be relatively secure. Ie I won't publicly post it, as I'm tired of the spam I've been getting).

If it's on Normal priority it really should work. Remember that QBasic ran fine on computers with 60 KHz processors and 640KB of RAM. So if you have a problem on ANY modern computer, it's definitely not from a slow CPU or not enough RAM. Either Windows is giving it a good strangling or something else is holding it up for some reason. You may find this helpful. www.network54.com/Forum/13959/message/1138066949/

ROFL! I had fun in QB class working with loops and modules while everyone else was learning decision statements. Of course, my teacher was ok with it, however it did embarass some of the more "technologically minded" students.

That's great news! Seeing as you're already ahead of the class, and loving it, I recommend you read this: qbasic.proboards6.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&n=1&thread=472Don't make a fuss about it in programs for class, but when making programs for yourself, give it a thought, and use the 'lightest' datatype you need for a variable. For the majority of your programs the difference will be minimal, but using types effectively can be a crucial skill at times, especially in tough number-crunching situations like 3D graphics. Sure if you have a faster computer it'll be able to run faster, but in my opinion, why use that excuse when just a little more thought will let it run on a slower computer? Or run more programs simultaneously?

Yeah sure I got MSN. If you click my profile it should have it, but here it is otherwise:
budzynowski <at> hotmail <dot> [ignorethis] com
The ignorethis bit is to avoid spammers harvesting my email. I suggest you take a similar approach; you'll be able to use your email address for much longer.
It's terrific that you're into this. Contant me on MSN! We'll have a great chat, I'm sure. I'll give you some good suggestions for programs. And I suggest you become a member of the forum; you'll be able to edit your posts and other stuff.
See you round.
