1) Get a good book on programming. There are many.
The book will depend on what language you decide on;
at least somewhat.

2) Don't expect to be a professional programmer overnight. It takes time and practice.

3) download sample programs and try to understand
what the programmer is doing and why.

4) The programming languages are many and everyone
has their favorite. Personally for Windows I like PowerBasic for windows.

Others like C better. There are lots of others.

Probably the best way to get started is with QuickBasic.
or PowerBasic for DOS. It gives you an page editor (usually referred to as an IDE) and the code for many things can be used in PowerBasic almost unchanged.
For Visual Basic there is more change necessary.

Pick a language that has good support. In my opinion again, this is PowerBasic. Their forum is the best.

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Use the Help section of whatever language you choose.
Some of the help is real good showing examples but again it depends on the language.

p.s. You might think of investing the money and time to take a class. It would probably speed up your grasping
the fundamentals.

I can't guarantee it'll be finished very soon, but it it's not I'll still give you some part to get through first.

Brace yourself though, programming is not easy for everyone, you need to have the right direction of thinking to understand it properly. My tutorial intends to give you the "whole truth" rather than over-simplifying at first and then going back on it later, so it's pretty packed with things you need to know.

You may want to search for a few tutorials first to get the feel it.
