Unix? Wow, you need some serious clue. Here you thought you had your geekiness fairly well evolved? You mock all geeks when you fail to notice Unix. Do you know what Linux is? Linux was based off Unix. I don't know much on Unix itself, but a simple google search should kick out some relavant information. Basically, though, Unix was written in C to be a spiffy OS because these coders found out that to run a game, they needed a better OS than DOS. So, they made Unix via C and it was spiffy as Canada. At least this is how the rumour goes. Unix is uber-powerful and a spiffy OS. If I had me a blank comp, I'd run Linux (remember, Linux = evolved Unix). I don't think you can actually use Unix on a comp because its still owned by IBM or someone, so Linux will do for my Unix enthusiasm. (btw, Linux is definately going on my first DIY comp). Stop throwing me around! Don't make me sick Sally on your {censored}! What's wrong with the monitor? Is it a CRT or LCD? It could be a software problem. These folks here ( www.protonic.com) can help you a lot, so long as you are patient and willing to do the grunt work yourself. I used to work there, until they got elitistical on me because I missed some uber-low quota (basically, I got my sorry {censored} a life, and didn't want to spend what was left between human contact and school at the comp). The quota was supposed to be 1 ticket a month, but when you have much better stuff to do, you give up on helping idiots defragment their HD. Seriously, these folks are great and I'm sort of sad that I stopped working for them. Of course, only a month after being "fired" (its volunteer, so they basically just shut off my account from lack of useage), I lost my life and now I wander the forums helping folks. So, yep, lateral movement is fun! Homeloaf, don't give up your social life. I recently was invited to my best friend's band concert (similarly to your band, they're getting pretty big, except they are about 2 months behind you guys. This is their first gig that lasts more than an hour, and they're having a private showing), but I can't go because my mother decided that I live on the Internet. While this is ordinarily true, it eternally vexes me that my social life is equivalent to that of a nill pointer (it doesn't exist). Anyway, the point is, we (or at least I) won't feel bad if you decide to go out with your friends or whatnot instead of coming here. While we do appreciate it, we (or at least I) realize that once you go geek, you can't go back (lol). A job? NOoooooooooooooooooooooo! Don't do it! Whatever you do, don't pull the pen's cap and sign! Seriously, jobs arg and while I'm not exactly one to say much about it (yep, I'd appreciate a job), there are better ways to ruin your life. Wait, that's in the reverse, because once you get up around my age (senior in HS), everyone has a job, so you'd pretty much be sitting around all day unless you have one. Well, I'm off to either: get a job get a girlfriend do both, by becomming a male {censored}.

Wow. Think that was a big enough post there Earl?
Linux I have heard of. I was told to use it not to long ago. But I'm not going to break my bank (ten dollars at the moment) to get an OS I've never used.
It's LCD and it's just broken. The screen is cracked and it looks like stuff is going to leak out.
Amazingly enough Mopsy has a girlfriend >> She's a nerd like me which is why I'm still with her >>
And I need a job. Now >>

I have a job. My parents manage Coast to Coast in Myrtle Point. Technically it's a TrueValue. But we call it Coast to Coast.
I haven't gotten any hours lately, though. I'm completely broke. As in 100% po'.
I'd like to point out that I have no social reputation to damage, and that I usually come here very late at night. As in 1 in the morning. This won't hurt my social life, trust me.

mopsy, PLEASE, do you think that geeks would talk about Linux more than they talk about Gmail if Linux wasn't FREE as well as terrific?
LINUX = FREE. EEE. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Ok I'm over it. But not only is it free, but legally, it cannot become un-free. That is, it is open source, and if you enhance it or modify it then you either: A) Make your changes available to nobody B) Make your changes available to everybody, free, and under the same conditions.
Now, Earl, you actually go quite wrong. Firstly, UNIX was not created in C. The people who made UNIX (as a response to an expensive OS called MULTICS - which is where the name UNIX came from) also made the B language and then the C language, and then rewrote UNIX in C. (I'm not sure what UNIX was originally coded in.)
UNIX was created before the days of DOS, and DOS borrows things from UNIX here and there. But UNIX was a multitasking multi-user OS long before DOS came along.
And, Earl, UNIX still lives in many places; while they cannot be CALLED "UNIX" they can be classified as UNIX systems. That's why they're called things like OpenBSD and Solaris.
Solaris is free (as of when Sun made it free fairly recently). It is arguable the best operating system in existence. It can run 128-bit mainframes just as well as 32-bit PCs. And it runs them REALLY well. It has terrific memory management and supports just about everything that UNIX can.
I'm considering switching my server to Solaris.
Linux is not actually a UNIX system but is made to function extremely similarly to UNIX systems.
I know that this is all very interesting (if you disagree, I'll ban you from the forum ^_^) but I have two assessments tomorrow so I'm going to turn in now. Pleasant days!

Okay. I have one more probelm with Unix then. I've got all my stuff on this computer now. And I would want to test it out. Could I do that without wiping all my stuff? Maybe I'll get my gramma to give me a junk PC to play with it on.
I FOUND A SOLUTION FOR MY MONITOR ISSUE!!!! I'm really happy. I've got a desktop monitor here and I'm using it as a dual screen thinger. It's awesome! I love it. If it didn't limit the portability I would keep it like this.
Maybe if I can get another computer I'll test out unix. But for now I'm sticking to windows.

Yes, get a junk PC to play with first, is my advice. Failing that, PARTITIONING! You can fairly easily run multiple OSs on a computer (not at once!) Partitioning involves splitting a hard drive into individual spaces called "partitions". I recommend it even when just running Windows. E.g. One partition for your import data files, one for your programs, one for windows, and others based on whatever needs you may have. This increases the efficiency of your file systems (fragmentation is more limited) and also will mean if one partition is corrupted the others can still be fine. You can get programs to do this with your hard disk, although do check how reliable they are because they involve moving heaps of data around and the sheer volume and speed of this means a slightly higher risk of something becoming corrupt. Also, to get you started, you can get a Linux that uses LOADLIN - Loads over Windows! (Or DOS) You start Windows, just have linux in its own cute little folder, and run it whenever you want. About actually using UNIX, I say try it and see where it fits with you. For me, UNIX is for playing with the computer. As in actually poking around with how it works and getting joy from getting down there with it, solving hardware problems and the like. Windows I use for most of my everyday stuff. Although I COULD do it all with Linux or some other UNIX, I don't. Bottom line: there's a substantial chance you won't want to switch permanently to Linux. If you do get a beautiful out-of-date computer, try www.freesco.orgIt's a small router/small-scale-server oriented Linux distribution that needs about 8MB of RAM, a floppy drive (hard disk not needed) and a pretty old CPU is fine. Oh and a network card will be EXTREMELY helpful. If you have at least one in it (it supports up to 9, for routing purposes etc.) you can run HTTP servers, FTP servers, and remote-login (what I was talking about before) servers and access all the stuff from another computer - quite a terrific experience the first time you do it, in my opinion. Oh, and whatever your choice, advise me and I'll help you through it.

I'll work my way up on that. Starting with having linux get it's own folder and such. Where would I manage to get a copy of that? I blanked and can't think of anything else to say... >>

www.freesco.org will get you a Linux that can sit within an ordinary Windows folder. (I think you need FAT or FAT32, i.e. Most Windows XP installations are unsuitable) I've got a version of Slackware that does this too. And come on, I'm sure you know how to use Google. "its" has no apostrophe when possessive; If it has one then it's a contraction of "it is". I gotta run. But I have more to say.

You're very critical of such things.
Google is my enemy. I don't like it. And yet I use it once a day.

Shut you up will! Things one of best in world, Google is.
It's getting used and abused now, unfortunately, obviously being the best and most widely used search engine, it's the one which most people try to get their ads and crap into, and most people try to hack, etc.

I think I'll do a whole post of gramatical/spelling/punctuation error's just for you later. Right now I will try the linux I downloaded and then edit this post to say what I think. If the edit never comes I am sorry.
I'm on a laptop. We have a external floppy that might work. I'd rather not as I'll be losing it in the coming weeks. Is there a way around this?

Do what they say, and MAKE THE FLOPPY.
Later on you can proceed to copy to the hard drive, if you like. (It's a good idea to do so, if you have a hard disk, because then you can download heaps of packages for it. I still suggest you try to get an old PC from somewhere, just make sure it has a network card.)

I can't put it on a seperate computer for at least 2 months. Shall I proceed with it on my laptop or shall I just wait till then?

Well, as I haven't a comp set to run Linux, and my mommy said (literally) that she'd kill me if I did something with the innards of the computer, I probably won't be regularly using Linux for about 3 years (I plan to DIY a comp for my thesis project for my senior year of college). Yes, my mother is controlling this way, although I could probably install the Linux over Windows app... Way to go mopsy, finding yourself a girlfriend. I still haven't one, although this nice person was kind enough to act as though she cares about me (highly doubt it, as any time I'm not directly talking to her, she will insult me or whatnot. So, either the paradoxical "I like you, but I'll act like I hate you", or she hates me. I'm thinking the latter ). In a slightly different note, some lodbs (ladies of dubious belonging) have decided to have their fun at lunch. Nope, nothing that's fun for me, just things like "Earl, if I paid you, would you {censored} me?". So, perhaps I should do the third option in my plan, "do both (become a male {censored}", roflmao! Like I said before, I bloody hate lodbs. Well, enough about me (yep, I do sound narcissistic at times; a fatal flaw of mine), Google owns and Unix might have been written in Assembly, as I remember reading an article (admittantly Wikipedia) where they mentioned writing some OS in Assembly for its efficiency, but hated that they had to reprogram it for each new computer. Further, a quote: So it is probable Unix was written in Assembly first.

I found her nearly three years ago (blinks) Our three year is april 21st.
I don't want to wait so Imma grab my external floppy and make the disk. (blinks)
